Shift is a play about a play – about reality and fiction.
The kingdom of Gallenor is in dire peril! The Dark Lord Bloodslayer has Princess Karina in his diabolical clutches! Dashing Sir Sterling and his plucky squire Flick must journey through unknown lands and eldritch dangers if they are to save her in time!
… So says the cover of ‘The Defender of Gallenor,’ a seemingly run-of-the-mill fantasy novel. But behind closed pages, the story is a little different. Flick feels she’s wasting her potential playing second fiddle. Karina’s job involves too much sacrifice for too little return. And the pressure of being a Dark Lord was never in the job description.
That’s why they’re going on their own quest this time, to find the one who put them into this mess. Armed with a sweet sword, a magic ferret and the great wizard Evandor, they’re sure they can’t fail. But narrative conventions can be hard to break, and Sir Sterling isn’t going to give up his lead role without a fight…
A metafictional comedy for secondary students, ideal for large casts and/or drama competitions. 60 mins.
